Celebrating true African beauty

Why is my skin changing after 40?

I noticed that my body has been going through a lot of changes since I turned 40. For one, I observed that my metabolism is much slower and that is probably owing to the fact that I am not as physically active as I was when I was younger. I don’t live a sedentary life but I know that I am not as active as I used to be, which means that my metabolism is much slower, making it also harder to digest certain foods. I realized that as we grow older, our bodies begin to reject certain foods and while we try to ignore this natural phenomenon, we find ourselves “forcing” our bodies to accept these foods that we know we struggle to digest. So my solution has been to go back to the streets and to resume my 5k walk/jug fitness combo that I was doing every morning but quit due to my crazy schedules.

And that isn’t the only thing that is changing as well. Since I crossed forty, my skin has changed as well. I went from having oily skin to now having a combination skin of normal to dry skin which is weird because I do not like my skin dry. My skin is also now very sensitive and I find myself breaking out easily especially when my skin becomes too dry.

If you find yourself in similar situation as mine, what you need is simple- hydration and moisture!

This is because as we age, our skin loses both sebum and moisture pretty fast leaving us with a thirsty skin that becomes easily irritated. So when we use products that hydrate and moisturize our skin, they feed our skin with the much needed moisture while helping to balance our skin. More than ever before, you need to pay close attention to the quality of skincare products that you use. At this age, your skin needs skincare products made with ingredients that not only provide moisture but is able to lock in the moisture to prevent water loss. So I am talking about ingredients like humectants that trap in moisture such as glycerine, allantoin, hyaluronic acid, collagen and lots more. These humectants not only lock in moisture but plumps the skin in the process while prevent wrinkles which is great for mature skin.

Other ingredients you should look out for is aloe Vera which has a very high water content of about 98 percent while the gel has nearly 100% water content. With such high water content, aloe Vera is able to hydrate, moisturize and soothe the skin at the same time!

Do not forget carrier oils and occlusive like jojoba oil, Shea butter and oils that balance the skin. And of course, antioxidants are very important for mature skin like Vitamin E, C, carotenoids and coenzyme Q10.

For a lot of people, managing skin changes as they age can be daunting but take care to journal these changes because by journaling, you can keep track of changes and monitor their triggers as well. Sometimes too you might need to see a dermatologist which is why journaling your skin changes helps as well because then you would be able to give detailed information about such changes to the dermatologist. You would also need to use the right skincare products for your skin as well.

For me, I have been using my products- Ene Naturals anti-aging products and they have helped restore moisture to my skin and kept my skin nourishes as well.
