Your exfoliator might be ruining your face

Exfoliation is often promoted as the secret to smooth, glowing skin. And while exfoliation can be beneficial, too much of it can quietly damage your skin over time.

Your skin has a natural protective barrier. This barrier keeps moisture in and irritants, bacteria, and pollution out. When you over-exfoliate — whether with scrubs, acids, or daily exfoliating cleansers — you slowly weaken this barrier.

The result?

Skin that burns when you apply products, frequent breakouts, increased sensitivity, dryness, tightness, and even hyperpigmentation. Ironically, many people respond to these problems by exfoliating even more, making the situation worse.

Healthy skin is not just about exfoliation; it’s about balance. Skin needs gentle exfoliation, but it also needs hydration, moisturising, and barrier repair.

If your skin is always reacting, stinging, or breaking out, the problem may not be acne or product failure. The problem may be a damaged skin barrier from over-exfoliation.

Sometimes the best skincare routine is not doing more — it’s doing less and allowing your skin to repair.

Healthy skin begins with a healthy barrier.
