Recycling: From H&M T-shirt to Kids throw pillow

This is why we must teach our kids the values of recycling.

Three days ago, my soon-to-be six year old son came home with a project to turn any of his old clothes into a throw pillow and I was so puzzled that I delayed a bit in starting the project because I kept asking myself for what purpose this project sought and of course, if I would be able to execute it.

Second day, after frequent hounding from my son, I decided that I would use his old T-shirt so I went to his wardrobe and I found a set of H&M Basics T-shirts I had bought three years ago. He had long stopped wearing them; in fact, one had bore a hole in it so I took that one. After much contemplation, I decided to cut off the sleeves and the neck all together. And then I got my sewing kit and I started stitching the edges with the needle. After that was done, I was left with one opening so I stuffed it with the sleeves and neck of the shirt that I had cut off, added some foams and stitched the opening. It was while doing this that an idea struck me to accessorize it a bit as it looked boring in my eyes. So I took the belt off an old blouse of mine and stitched it around the edges. The finished work surprised me a lot!

My kids were asleep when I completed the throw pillow project. As at this morning when I showed them the handy pillow, they were surprised and excited at the sight. My daughter was fascinated by it and was already requesting that we both made one for her as she’s very handy and creative.

I sincerely never saw this project as an opportunity to teach my kids the values of recycling but am glad that this is the lesson that we all have learnt.

We own this earth and each of us is responsible for protecting this earth. So before you discard anything, ask yourself if such an item could be used for other purposes. And you will be amazed by the result.

Why small businesses need good people skills

This is part of my new series on small businesses and how one can run them successfully.

People are very important to the success or failure of businesses – whether big or small, having to relate with people daily and how you relate with them will determine whether you would be able to close the deal or lose out on it. This is so important for small businesses because they do not have the financial largess that big corporations have to create and disseminate huge commercials and neither do they have the wide reach of big corporations. so, from experience as a small business owner, I believe that your people skills are so important to your business because you are dealing directly with customers and other people within your value chain and since you cannot easily write them off and expect the world to bow at your feet, then you better improve your people skills and do good by your business.

Having good people skills mean you are able to communicate well with people, relate well with them as well as be a good listener to them as well. Communication is a two way street so while you might be good at marketing your business and yourself as a brand, you also have to listen to your customers, embrace their feedback whether positive or negative and learn to grow from them; as well as learn to build relationship with them as well. No business can survive on one-time only customers because they only use your product or services just once and do not return. But since the survival of your business relies on repeat customers, building a good relationship with them is crucial because you need loyal customers to keep your business going.

Another ache or comfort to your tooth is that small businesses rely heavily on referrals and word of mouth so if your people skills are poor, then you can expect that the content of the words being spread around would not favour you or your business. It is that simple.

Here are things customers dislike about businesses or business owners with poor people skills:

  1. You are rude. Nobody likes to be disrespected, especially not when you are exchanging my money for your product or services. If you are rude to customers, do not expect the business to grow or even repeat patronage.
  2. You are condescending: Nobody likes to deal with condescending people. The simple fact that a prospective customer does not fall within your target market does not necessarily mean that you should treat such a client disparagingly. There have been situations like that when I had had to find other service providers with the kind of services that the prospective client wanted, even though I could not be of much use to them. So at that moment, they were not my customers but because I had helped them to find the service providers that were suitable to them, I was able to maintain the communication line because I knew that they would be able to refer me to somebody else and that sometime in the future, they could actually be my customers.
  3. You are not flexible: One of the benefits of being a small business is our flexibility because we do not have a long chain of command when it comes to making decisions as such, no bureaucracy. And secondly, because we deal with the customers directly, we are able to better understand the customers and tailor-made our services or products to suit individual needs. Offering bespoke or custom products and services gives small businesses an edge so when a business owner is unable to take advantage of this and insist on imposing his or her own ideas on the customer, it is disrespectful and amounts to poor communication and relationship skill.
  4. You just can’t handle conflicts or challenges: When you deal with people, you should expect conflicts and expect challenges as well. But to go AWOL on your customers or leave prospective customers hanging without any feedback from you is so wrong and disrespectful. Nobody wants to deal with people like that.

I experienced poor people skills with a service provider recently who not only ignored me during pricing but left me hanging with no feedback. And when I did contacted this person to ask if my price offer was accepted and why my messages were disregarded, she told me she had a lot of work to do and so forgot about me. And then, she ignored me again! So I took my money elsewhere.

When you run a small business, please tuck away or completely get rid of your ego because some humility will take your business a long way.

How to make Nappy Rash Gel

Watch full video on YouTube handle: Ene Naturals – Nappy rash gel video

Nappy rash is very common in babies and little kids. It is usually caused by dampness or moisture on a child’s skin caused by wet diapers which when in contact with the skin, can cause irritation which is the nappy rash. This is why it is recommended that diapers are changed regularly and not left to be too dense before being changed.

From experience, allergy can also cause rash. For example, both my sons were sensitive to perfumed products like perfumed wipes, diapers or even perfumed powders or soaps and lotions. This is why I switched to natural products for my kids. Using fragrance – free products will limit nappy rash and common rash in babies and kids.

Rash can also be caused by drug reactions so do read drug interactions and side effects before giving such drugs to your kids especially antibiotic. Since rash can be harmless but irritant, you might have to wait till the dosage is exhausted before considering treatment.

While many topical products are out there in beauty stores, I have always relied on fresh aloe Vera gels and even vitamin C tablet to treat rash. This time around, I made a rash gel without the aloe Vera plant for people who do not have access to the plants.

The recipe for this DIY nappy rash cream is:

The aloe Vera gel on its own is perfect but since I am using the packaged one, I added glycerin because it helps to sooth the skin and with the aloe Vera gel, it becomes a double dose of coolant as well as moisturizes the skin and help to soften the skin. Natural aloe Vera has vitamin C and in its absence, I added vitamin C tablet which helps to clear the skin as well. Lavender oil is soothing and calming as well and helps to make the skin condition less irritable. It also has a soft, pleasant fragrance which makes this gel even more appealing.

To make the nappy rash gel is a rather simple process.

And viola, this is what you get:

Give this a try and tell me what you think.

Press for Progress for women’s rights

Today March 8, the world celebrates International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is Press for Progress and IWD is encouraging everyone – man or woman to take action to protect women’s rights and equality.

Personally, I have pledged to forge positive visibility of women by finding ways to make women more visible. We want more platforms for women in leadership positions – whether political leaders, economic or corporate leaders, religious leaders and communal leaders to be noticed and heard so that they could positively influence other women and people in general.

Celebrating IWD goes beyond sending cute messages to one another but gives us an opportunity to reinstate our resolve to empower one another. Do you have a special skill or talent that is worth sharing that can empower another woman? Then please do not hesitate in doing just that. When I see women in need, I do not just give them financial support but go as far as helping them gain skills in areas where they are passionate about so that they can be self-sustaining and are able to empower others down the line.

My pledge to make women more visible ties in with my 2018 New year resolution which is not to just give people, especially down-trodden women money but to empower them for life. This is why I am so passionate about this year’s press for progress.

We women must learn to look beyond the gossiping, the envy and jealousy to focusing rather on what matters most – and that is an empowered woman who can be a person of influence. Because like the old saying goes, “educate a woman and you educate a nation”. We are powerful as women and we must use our powers right.

Visit IWD and take action today! Press for progress at #PressforProgress

How to make hydrating Body Butter

There are so many body butter recipes out there and it is so easy to make that it is the first thing most natural skin care enthusiasts learn to make. Body butters usually contain heavy natural butters like Shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter and natural oils as well. The healing power of body butters can not be underestimated because they are able to treat stretch marks, certain fibrosis, sunburn, spider veins, dry, flaky skin, to mention but a few. So body butters are great if you suffer from any of these or need intense moisture for your skin

But… yes, there is one 😀

Body butters contain high amount of natural oils, which though do not clog your pores but cause those of us who live in Africa to sweat a lot! From experience as a natural skin care crafter, I have had people complain all the time about body butters making them sweat a lot due to the African heat. If you have been to African – and I live in a very hot, tropical Nigeria where the sun shines all year round! My, you would give body butters a second thought as well. Secondly, we Africans predominantly have thick, oily skin hence when we use some body butters, we feel as though we’ve got grease on our skin.

So this was the reason why I formulated my own body butter. My recipe has one unique ingredient- water! With the addition of water, less amount of butters and oil and of course, with beeswax completely eliminated, what you get is a thick, creamy but light body butter that hydrates your skin and keeps you from sweating.

So if you live in Africa but still want to enjoy using body butters, then watch this video and start making your own body butter.

Am happy to hear from you and respond to your questions. So pls leave a comment below.

Secrets of Natural skin care

I have been making natural skin care products for almost six years now so I can testify to the goodness of natural products for our skin, hair and general well being. When I use natural skin care products for myself and family, I do feel very good about myself because I know that I am keeping toxins which are common in cosmetic products away.

One of the known gains of using natural products is their safety to our skin and the environment at large. Natural products are made from organically grown plants and produce that do not pollute the earth as their systems of farming contain less toxins and are earth-friendly. So if you are looking for a way to contribute to protecting the earth and the environment, then patronize organic skincare products. You will feel good about yourself.

Second benefits of natural skin care products is that they protect your skin and body from toxins found in chemicals used for cosmetic products. Natural skin care products are chemical free, preservatives free and are free of artificial colors and other by-products so using natural products will be doing your body and health a whole lot of good. We are at an age where strange diseases and all sorts of cancer is on the increase, many of which have been linked to toxins found in cosmetic products. We must protect our skin and bodies; and going natural is the first step in the right direction.

Thirdly, natural skin care products contain a whole lot of goodness and nourishment for our skin and body which I will like to highlight below:

Anti-oxidants (Natural protectors):

Antioxidants protect our skin cells from damage and are responsible for skin cell regeneration and repair. Natural oils and produce are rich sources of antioxidants which help to repair and restore our skin.

Natural oils and other natural skin care ingredients have high anti-inflammatory properties as such have healing powers to heal our skin of damages like fibrosis, spider veins, stretch marks, swelling, sunburn and a whole lot. Natural skin care products have the ability to heal the skin even faster than any store bought cosmetic products loaded with chemicals.

Collagen boosters:

Natural skin care ingredients are loaded with properties that boost collagen in our skin. Collagen is the main structural protein found in our skin and body and vitamin C plays a significant role in the formation of collagen. Natural skin care ingredients are loaded with vitamin C that boosts collagen, which gives the skin elasticity and helps fight signs of aging.

Anti-aging benefits

Natural skin care ingredients are loaded with vitamins and minerals including being natural sources of Vitamins A & E. When you use natural skin care products, you do not need to use synthetic vitamins A or E or collagen because they are so full of nourishment that they fight wrinkles, reverse the signs of aging and makes the skin youthful for longer. Elasticity is what the skin needs to stay youthful and this is what natural skin care products give.

Free radicals eliminators

Natural skin care ingredients eliminate free radicals because of their rich source of Vitamin C and Alpha hydroxy acids which help to strip the skin of dead skin cells. Take pure goat milk for example, it is so high in AHA and is why it is used for natural skin brightening as it strips the skin of dead cells for a clearer complexion. Citrus based essential oils like orange, lemon, grapefruit are also rich sources of vitamin C and is the reason why they are used in treating acne and pimples.

Natural Moisturizers:

Natural skincare products have the ability to lock in moisture and keep our skin hydrated for longer. So whether we choose to use natural oils or to use natural sources of milk, our skin will receive intense moisture which means beautiful soft and shiny skin as against dry, flaky skin.

Natural skin brightening:

Natural ingredients like goat milk, lemon oil, orange oil, Jasmine oil, coconut oil and a whole host of others naturally clear our skin of uneven skin tone by stripping the skin of dead cells. With clearer complexion means a more even skin tone and brighter complexion.

Since I started using natural skin care products, I spend less time and money on makeup now because I no longer have to battle free radicals or be ashamed to go out bare faced. I love my natural skin so much that I hardly wear makeup. And I believe that this is important because many people spend more time and money on makeup than on their skin. Embrace nature, embrace your skin and you will have only yourself to thank.

Dark spots and sunburn treatment with oils: Spotlight on Ene Naturals dark spots removal oil

Contrary to belief, harsh skin bleaching products in tubes or other forms do not necessarily clear dark spots like age spots, sunburn or dark spots caused by injury or scars; or even dark spots caused by skin that has been burnt by bleaching products. What these whitening or lightening or bleaching products do is to amplify the damaged areas because while they lighten the rest of the skin that is not covered by dark spots, they are unable to clear the spots but make them even more pronounced.

But why is this happening? This happens because most of these whitening or bleaching agents actually do not go deep within our skin and under our skin to heal the skin from inside out. It is a fact that for long lasting results and for healing to occur, the skin must be healed from the inside out.

This is where oils are different. And how you ask? Because oils are rich in so much nutrients, vitamins and minerals, they are rich in anti-oxidants and Collagen, which helps cell regeneration. Meaning, the oils help the skin to create new cells by getting rid of the old one so that new ones can appear. During the cell regeneration process, you will find the dark, dry outer layers of the dark spots peeling away to reveal newer ones which are brighter and same color as our natural skin. This is why natural oils are superior to skin whitening or bleaching products when it comes to clearing sunburn or dark spots.

I recently developed a blend of natural, healing oils that treat dark spots, sunburns and damaged skin. In this blend amongst a wide collection of oils, you will find carrot seed oil, frankincense oil, rose oil, Jasmine oil, orange oil, lemon oil, coconut oil, castor oil and more. These natural oils not only clear the skin but will give one a brighter, natural complexion.

Nature takes its time, I must say because this is not a quick fix but when we allow the oils to complete its cycle of healing which is cell regeneration, you will be happy you waited.

The Ene Naturals Dark Spots removal oil is now available at our store on this site. Give nature a chance and you will never regret it.

My Valentine lipstick adventure

Hi guys,

Happy Valentine’s day!

So, what was your valentine’s day experience like? For me, it is almost the same yearly as I usually spend the day all to myself and away from the madness of hectic roads caused by the heavily commercialized valentine’s day celebration.

So, this year, I gifted myself with Labelle Makeup new collection of liquid matte lipsticks which came as part of its Valentine Set. It came in a beautiful black box and accompanied by a bedazzled key-ring and a box of heart-shaped chocolates. I really loved and enjoyed this package. Inside were three liquid matte lipsticks:

The first lipstick I sampled was Russian girl which is a bright red sexy lipstick while Victorian Glam is a much darker shade that is daring and seductive. Mocha is soft and sultry. The lipstick is extremely light-weight, very easy to apply and lasts the entire day because it is waterproof. I like the fact that I was not bothered in between meals and drinks because the lipstick did not wipe off. In fact, I did not have to touch it up because it stayed on just as I had applied it earlier.

I actually tried washing the lipstick off with water and soap; it really was not easy to wipe off as it stayed on.

All three shades were the perfect valentine shades for me because I felt pretty and sexy in all of them.

My verdict: I give this lipstick 5 out of 5 because I could not find anything wrong with them. You can purchase yours at
